3 resident doctors of Gynaecology Dept suspended after woman delivers outside Jaipur Hospital

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Health Department recently suspended three resident doctors and served a show cause notice to the Medical Superintendent of Kanwatia Hospital after a woman delivered her baby outside the hospital on Thursday after she was allegedly denied admission.

The three suspended doctors are PG students of the 2021 batch, 2022 batch and 2023 batch affiliated with the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College.

This move was taken after a preliminary investigation found their action as "serious negligence and insensitivity" and consequently suspended them. In addition to suspending them, the department also served a show cause notice to the medical superintendent Dr Rajendra Singh Tanwar for supervisory negligence in the case. It sought a detailed explanation in three days on why disciplinary action should not be initiated against him.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening when the woman in Jaipur was brought to the hospital with labour pain. When the hospital staff denied her admission, she delivered her baby outside the main gate of the hospital. According to a TOI news report, the woman was in a high-risk pregnancy as her haemoglobin level was much below normal.

According to an IANS report, The staff referred the woman to another hospital and did not arrange an ambulance. The Husband Ashok Verma took his wife to Kanwatia Hospital when she had labour pain. The doctors after diagnosis referred her to Janana Hospital. Verma pleaded with them to get her admitted to the hospital. The staff refused blatantly following which an argument broke out. The staff then asked them to leave the premises and visit the Janana Hospital. The staff are alleged to have neither helped the woman nor provided an ambulance.

Soon after coming out of the hospital, the woman delivered the baby girl on a platform adjacent to the hospital building.

However, the investigation report revealed the doctors at the hospital talked about referring her to another hospital but did not do so. It was found that because the pregnant woman was not referred to another hospital, it led to confusion and by the time she came out from the labour room and reached outside the hospital, she gave birth to the baby girl there.

Civil Lines MLA Gopal Sharma then reached the hospital and met Superintendent Rajendra Singh Tanwar scolding him for the staff's attitude. He met the victim's family and assured them of all help. Additional Chief Secretary Shubhra Singh also directed officials to visit the place to investigate the matter.

“We immediately took the baby and the woman inside the hospital. Both are fine. The woman remained in the labour room for 45 minutes, but she herself came out and when doctors searched for her, she had already given birth to the baby. We have submitted our report to the medical education department in the matter,” Dr Tanwar told TOI.

Shubhra Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Education, said after the matter came to light, the department constituted an inquiry committee with immediate effect.
