37-year-old doctor falls victim to sextortion scam, loses Rs 1 lakh

Extortion
Surat: In a disturbing case of cybercrime, a 37-year-old doctor who runs clinics in Navsari and Gandevi has filed a police complaint after allegedly being blackmailed and extorted of Rs 1 lakh by cyber criminals through a sexually explicit video call.
The incident began on July 29, when the doctor received an unexpected WhatsApp video call around 11 p.m. from an unknown number. During the 90-second call, a woman appeared on screen and allegedly undressed herself. According to the FIR, the doctor attempted to disconnect the call but was unable to do so.
Shortly after the call ended, the same woman contacted the doctor again, stating that the video had been recorded and threatening to make it viral on social media unless he paid money.
Alarmed by the threat and fearing damage to his professional reputation, the doctor initially transferred Rs 10,000 via QR code. However, the demands soon escalated. The woman contacted him again, stating the video had already been uploaded online and demanded Rs 45,000 more to take it down.
The doctor complied and paid the amount through multiple UPI transactions made from different bank accounts.

After this second phase of extortion, the doctor confided in his friend, who advised him to report the matter to the national cybercrime helpline (1930). Based on the complaint, Gandevi police registered an FIR against three individuals — the woman seen in the video call and two men who allegedly received the extorted funds via UPI.
