6 Indian pathologists, scientists shine in Stanford University 2025 Top 2% Scientists List

6 Indian pathologists, scientist shine in Stanford University 2025 Top 2% Scientists List

New Delhi: Altogether 6 Indian pathologists and scientists from India's prestigious health and medical institutes have been recognised among the world's top 2% of scientists in the prestigious database curated by Professor John PA Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository.

This honour acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field. The database of Stanford University for the year 2025 of top-cited scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted h-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.

Below are the details of the Indian pathologists included in Stanford University's 2025 list:

1. Dr Bharat Rekhi

Renowned pathologist, Dr Bharat Rekhi, was recently awarded the Best Paper of the Year 2024 by the Virchows Archiv – European Journal of Pathology for his groundbreaking research. He is a Professor at Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai, with a special interest in bone and soft tissue tumours (adult and pediatric), gynec pathology and related molecular and cytopathology.

He serves on the editorial board of WHO-IARC for the reporting system in soft tissue cytopathology and is a standing committee member for WHO-IARC books(5th and 6th editions) and is one of the four global members of the cytopathology editorial board. He has many awards to his credit, three gold medal orations and presented at National and International Conferences, including European Congress of Pathology(ECP), International Congress of Cytology (ICC), European Congress of Cytology (ECC), IAP-Asia Pacific, USCAP, ESMO-Asia 2019 (Invited speaker) and NUHS surgical pathology course, Singapore, 2019 and sarcoma preceptorship course, Singapore.

He was chairperson in sessions during ECP 2020, 2021 and 2022. He is the Editor-In-Chief of IJPM, secretary of the Indian Academy of Cytologists and has authored/co-authored 261 PUBMED-indexed publications, more than 100 abstracts as author and co-author in the official journals of International Conferences and has written several book chapters, including the 5th edition of World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of Tumours of soft tissue and bone, pediatric and skin tumours.

He is an outreach editor for the cytopathology journal, associate editor of BMC Cancer and a recognised MD teacher. He is also on the editorial board of Pathology Research and Practice Journal. He is one of the country advisors (North) for the prestigious Royal College of Pathologists, London.

Dr Bharat has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 287,697 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 257,356 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 266 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

2. Dr Surinder Kumar

Former Director Professor and Head of the Mycoplasma Research Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, Dr Surinder's primary research interests focus on Mycoplasma and Chlamydophila pneumoniae. Dr Surinder has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025, for his remarkable contribution in Pathology.

He has authored six books, including Textbook of Microbiology, Essentials of Microbiology, Practical Microbiology for MBBS Students, Textbook of Microbiology for Dental Students, Textbook of Microbiology for BSc Nursing, and Textbook of Microbiology for Diploma General Nursing and Midwifery Students.

Dr Kumar has received several honours, including the WHO Fellowship in 2006, inclusion in Elsevier BV’s “World Ranking Top 2% Scientists” list in 2022, the “International Best Researcher of the Year” Research Peace Award in 2019, and the “International Best Researcher Award” from the International Science, Technology & Research Awards (ISTRA) in 2024.

As per the list, he holds a rank of 383,949 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 440,083 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 5, with altogether 113 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

3. Dr Nalini Gupta

She is a Professor in the Department of Cytology and Gynaecological Pathology at PGIMER, Chandigarh. She completed her MBBS and MD (Pathology) from Government Medical College, Amritsar, and holds a DNB (Pathology) from the National Board of Examinations. She also trained as a Senior Resident in Pathology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, and received six months of specialised training in the U.K. in Liquid-Based Cytology for gynaecological and non-gynaecological samples, including HPV typing.

Her primary areas of interest include fine needle aspiration cytology, gynaecological cytology, and cancer research, particularly in carcinoma cervix, lung, and head and neck cancers. She has led and contributed to several research projects, including studies on endometrial carcinoma biomarkers, HPV and EBV detection, and immunochemistry in various cancers. Her ongoing research focuses on EGFR mutations in non-small cell lung cancer, biological markers in endometrial carcinoma, and HPV screening among female sex workers in Chandigarh.

Prof. Gupta specialises in fine needle aspiration cytology, liquid-based cytology, and ancillary techniques applicable to cytology samples. She is a life member of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists, National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Academy of Cytologists, and Indian Society for the Study of Lung Cancer. She has over 140 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

She has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. She holds a rank of 203,900 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 197,793 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 339 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

4. Dr Pranab Dey

Dr Pranab Dey was superannuated as Professor of Cytology at a premier national institute, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He has devoted more than three decades to research, reporting and teaching.

Dr Dey published 13 books on cytology, gynaecologic pathology, and laboratory techniques and is considered one of the leading authors of pathology. He contributed significant original research works (more than 500). Dr Dey has an intense interest in artificial intelligence and has published several research papers in this area over the last two decades.

Dr Dey has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 112,423 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 111,809 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 7, with altogether 339 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

5. Dr Deepali Jain

Working as a Pathologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Dr Deepali specialises in Thoracic Pathology and Cytopathology. Her academic and research interests focus on lung cancer, sinonasal cancer, and thymic tumours. She has received several awards, including the AIIMS Oncology Research Award in 2020 and 2021, the Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research Award from IASLC in 2021, the DST SERB Women POWER fellowship in 2021, and multiple fellowships and honours such as FRCPath, FIAC, and the IASLC International Mentorship Award.

She is a member of committees like the ICCR Thymic Epithelial Tumours dataset authoring committee and serves on editorial boards, including the upcoming IAC-IARC International System for Reporting Lung Cytopathology and the WHO classification of thoracic tumours. Dr Deepali has published books and chapters, including the “Atlas of Thymic Pathology” and 40 book chapters in major WHO classifications.

Her current research projects include studying tumour mutation burden in advanced non-small cell lung carcinomas, molecular mechanisms of COVID-19 by RNA sequencing, molecular subtyping and immunomodulation in small cell lung carcinoma, HPV association in sino-nasal epithelial tumours, and the immunologic milieu and PD-L1 in non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Dr Deepali has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. She holds a rank of 66,044 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 64,310 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 1,360 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

6. Md Sadique Hussain

Hussain is a hardworking, dedicated, and enthusiastic professional with strong interpersonal and organisational skills, as well as flexibility and energy. He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy from Lovely Professional University and his Master of Pharmacy in Pharmacology from Jaipur National University.

He is currently pursuing his PhD in Pathology at Uttaranchal University while working as an Assistant Professor at the Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dehradun, since June 2024, and as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, since June 2025.

Hussain has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 523,455 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 212,860 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 193 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
