85 vacant posts at IGMCRI Puducherry, Govt urged to start recruitment process immediately

vacaPuducherry: Around 85 posts of professors, associate professors and senior resident doctors are lying vacant at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) Puducherry.
In view of the acute shortage of faculty, the Pondicherry State Students-Parents Welfare Association has requested the Puducherry government to promptly address the issue of vacant posts by prioritizing their filling.
Addressing a letter to Lt. Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, V. Balasubramanian, the president of the association pointed out how the institute and the students will face problems if the vacant positions are not filled.

The letter stated that IGMCRI is facing an acute shortage of faculty members and the move to fill up the posts remained on hold since March. Mentioning the number of vacant posts, the association stressed the significance of filling the empty positions, warning that failing to do so would cause permanent damage to the student community and damage the government's reputation.
"Though the management of IGMCRI had issued a notification for the filling up of these posts in March, the move was put on hold in the wake of the Model Code of coming into force due to the Lok Sabha elections. The Puducherry government should get the approval of the Election Commission of India and start the recruitment process immediately," said the president of the association as reported by The Hindu.
The shortage of faculty across the medical colleges in India is not only due to the genuine shortage of qualified faculty, but it is also because even the available faculty often lacks the inclination to teach at the college level, a Parliamentary Health Panel recently opined in its report as reported by the Medical Dialogues Team.
Indian Medical Colleges have been reeling under a shortage of adequate faculty for a long time. Earlier, 349 out of the total 654 medical colleges across the country got a show cause notice from the Apex Medical regulator NMC for violations of the Minimum Standard Requirements 2020 including a deficiency in having the required faculty numbers.
