After 30 years of service at AIIMS Delhi, Padma Shri Dr Randeep Guleria takes voluntary retirement
Dr Randeep Guleria served at AIIMS for more than 30 years. The former AIIMS Director applied for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) after his tenure ended on September 23.
New Delhi: Former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, Dr Randeep Guleria, has taken voluntary retirement after completing around 30 years of service in the premier health institute of the country located at the national capital, Delhi.
Dr Guleria was among the key people who led the central government's response team during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also played a major role in creating awareness about COVID and the treatment to be followed.
He served at AIIMS for more than 30 years. The former AIIMS Director applied for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) after his tenure ended on September 23. Dr Guleria was supposed to superannuate in April 2024.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that Dr Guleria's tenure as director was supposed to be over in March, but it was extended twice. Initially, his term was extended by three months till June 24, and upon its completion, his term was again extended by three months. He took over charge as a director of AIIMS Delhi on 28th March 2017.
He initially joined AIIMS as an assistant professor in the department of medicine in 1992, following which he subsequently formed the department of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. Dr. Guleria was conferred with the prestigious "Padma Shri" Award in 2015 by the President of India and recently with the "Dr. B.C. Roy Award in the category Eminent Medical Person" for the year 2014. Dr. Guleria has been a dedicated teacher for undergraduate, postgraduate, and DM fellows for the last 30 years. He has been actively involved in taking classes for undergraduate students in the area of respiratory medicine.
The memorandum issued by the president of AIIMS extending the tenure of Dr. Randeep Gulleria w.e.f 25.03.2022 by three months or by the time the new Director is appointed.
Meanwhile, the Times of India reports that there are sources claiming that the doctor is set to join a private-sector hospital, and have been talking to them for some time.
