Ahmedabad doctor alleges domestic violence, forced IVF by husband and in-laws

Ahmedabad: A 29-year-old doctor working at an urban health centre in Ahmedabad has filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband and his family, alleging mental and physical harassment since her marriage in 2023. An FIR has been registered at Vejalpur police station under charges of domestic violence.
In her statement recorded on Tuesday, the doctor named her husband, a Class-I officer in the roads and buildings department in Gandhinagar, along with her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, as accused. Her father-in-law is reportedly serving in the city police force.
According to a report by The Times of India, the FIR stated that marital discord began within months of the wedding over personal issues, including alleged inappropriate chats found on her husband’s phone.
The FIR also alleges deception regarding the husband’s travel plans, which reportedly deepened marital discord. The doctor later claimed to have found evidence suggesting he had travelled abroad. When she confronted her in-laws and visited his Gandhinagar office, she learnt that he was on a 15-day leave and had gone to Pattaya in Thailand.
The doctor further claimed that she faced repeated pressure to undergo IVF despite medical reports indicating that the husband was not capable of fathering a child. She stated that she underwent three IVF cycles, endured considerable physical distress, and was still subjected to taunts over failure to conceive.
She alleged that on February 5, after returning home from duty, she was physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws. She alleged that she was dragged out of her room and her mobile phone was taken away. She later managed to seek help from a neighbour and contacted her father, after which the 181 Abhayam helpline and police intervened.
Vejalpur police have registered a case of domestic violence and initiated further investigation.
