AIIMS Jodhpur MCh Neurosurgery graduate alleges ragging complaint led to academic harassment, repeated exam failures

Jodhpur: Alleging that reporting ragging led to years of academic harassment and unfair evaluation in the first examination, an MCh Neurosurgery graduate from AIIMS Jodhpur has come forward with serious accusations against the institute and his seniors.

Addressing a press conference in Jodhpur on Friday, a MCh medico from 2020–23 batch, claimed that he was deliberately failed three consecutive times after filing a ragging complaint against a senior in 2021. He alleged that he eventually cleared the examination on his fourth attempt only after an independent external assessment was conducted under strict security arrangements.

He said that he decided to bring the issue before the media ahead of the AIIMS Jodhpur convocation on Sunday, where Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel attended as the chief guest. He said that although the minister had assured an investigation into his complaint, no effective action has been taken so far.

He said his intention was not only to seek justice for himself but also to ensure that other medical students do not face similar experiences. The doctor also moved court with the issue, but the matter is currently pending before a court.

Alleged academic harassment

The doctor has alleged that in 2021 he filed complaints with the institute and higher authorities against a senior student accusing him of ragging. Following the complaint, he claimed that certain senior faculty members in the department developed a biased attitude towards him and unfairly influenced his academic career.

He alleged that he was deliberately failed in the final M.Ch. Neurosurgery examination conducted in June 2023 and claimed if an independent review of his answer scripts and evaluation were conducted, he would be found to have passed in his first attempt.

In a letter to the institute's executive director on April 25, 2026, the doctor alleged that an independent external examination was conducted in December 2024 under videography and strict security measures. He said he passed this examination, following which he completed the M.Ch. Neurosurgery course.

The doctor said that he is currently being awarded a degree for passing his fourth attempt, whereas, according to him, if the evaluation had been fair, he would have been declared successful in his first attempt in June 2023. He said that attempts in medical education directly impact a doctor's future, government appointments, super-speciality opportunities, and the credibility of private practice. Therefore, a degree from his fourth attempt will have a lasting negative impact on his entire career.

He said he raised the matter through Rajya Sabha MP Rajendra Gehlot and MP Hanuman Beniwal. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Patel, in a letter dated April 22, 2026, acknowledged receiving his complaint regarding ragging and forwarded it to the concerned department for appropriate action.

However, he alleged that despite the minister's communication, no fair investigation has been conducted and his complaints remain unresolved, reports ETV Bharat.

After being declared unsuccessful in the M.Ch. Neurosurgery final exam held in June 2023, the doctor subsequently obtained documents through the Right to Information (RTI), which allegedly revealed several serious irregularities.

He alleged that his average internal theory assessment over the three-year course was calculated to be lower than his actual marks and claimed that, had the correct average been considered, he would have passed the M.Ch. examination in his first attempt.

He further alleged that practical internal assessments were not conducted as prescribed during the course. Additionally, he claimed that on the second day of the practical examination, candidates were sent back without asking any questions, whereas as per the rules, thesis, logbook, research publications, radiology, surgical instruments etc. should have been evaluated.
