Assam: Cardiac surgeon stirs controversy once again, makes shocking claims curing for HIV, cancer disease
Guwahati: While several studies indicate that HIV has no known cure and probably will take years to find one, Dr Dhani Ram Baruah, an Asmeese cardiac surgeon, surprised the medical fraternity with his shocking claims that HIV is manageable and can be cured with 'biomolecules', developed by him
Apart from claiming that he has the ability and cure for HIV disease, he has also claimed that he could eliminate heart blockages, and even provide relief to cancer patients with his alleged approach that involves utilizing isolated "biomolecules" derived from edible medicinal plants indigenous to the northeast region.
According to Dr Baruah, these molecules have been named Baruah small interfering RNAs (Baruah siRNAs), which are claimed to target mutated (impaired) microRNAS (miRNAs) responsible for the disease.
This is not the first time that the doctor has stirred controvery. Back in the year 1997, Dr Baruahalong with his assistant surgeon from Hong Kong, Dr Jonathan Ho Kei-Shing, had stirred controversy when he claimed that he had transplanted a pig's heart and a liver on a 32-year-old man at the Dr Dhani Ram Baruah Heart Institute & Research Centre at Sonapur in the outskirts of Guwahati, according to TOI news report.
Following the operation, the patient survived for a week but died due to multiple infections. The two doctors were arrested as xenotransplantation (transplanting organs from one species to another) was not allowed under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act of 1994. The duo was held guilty of unethical procedure and culpable homicide under the act and was imprisoned for 40 days.
Over the years, Baruah has consistently appeared, putting forth assertions that are considered either unusual or innovative, depending on one's perspective in the debate.
In 2008, he claimed to have developed a “genetically engineered” vaccine that would “correct” congenital heart defects. In 2011, he claimed to have found the “cure” for HIV by “stopping the amplification of micro-RNA”.
Four years later, he announced he had successfully isolated biological molecules from medicinal plants in the Himalayan region, the Baruah Biological Combat Genes, which he said would act as “biological missiles” to “kill HIV”.
"This innovation holds promise for combating diseases such as Cancer and HIV, with Twelve Baruah combat Genes arising from siRNA treatment now applied for patent," mentioned on his institution's website.

Speaking to selected media houses, chief scientist of Dr Dhani Ram Baruah Heart City & City of Human Genome, Dr SA Achrekar claimed that the institute, of late, has successfully treated a number of patients suffering from Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), congenital heart disease (CHD), diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis, HIV/AIDS and kidney disorder among other deadly diseases.
"The institute further claimed that with Baruah's genetic engineering, CAD patients need not undergo bypass surgery. Baruah molecules remove the blockages, reduce lipid levels and improve blood fluidity with improved ejection function of the heart," claimed Achrekar, adding that in CHD, "Baruah molecules" rectify the physiological function of the heart, Times of India reports
She further claimed that "Baruah anti-cancerous molecule does not allow the spread of cancer (Metastasis), and kills cancer cells specifically without harming normal cells. It cuts off blood supply to cancer cells thereby, stopping nutrients supply, killing the cancer cells."
