Assam Dermatologist's wife held for allegedly torturing domestic help

Dibrugarh: In an alleged case of child abuse, Dibrugarh police have arrested the wife of a renowned dermatologist for torturing their minor domestic help, police said on Tuesday.

The woman was held following complaints from neighbours, Officer in Charge of Dibrugarh Police Station, Raju Bahadur Chetry, said.

According to a PTI report, A case has been registered against her under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, he said.

The minor, originally from Arunachal Pradesh, has lived with the couple since 2013.

The doctor, a skin specialist, has been absconding since the arrest of his wife, Chetry added.

As per a media report in The Sentinel, a neighbour said, “We have often witnessed the woman torturing the minor. The minor never speaks to us and always wears masks because of the instructions given to her”. Another neighbour said, “It’s an inhuman torture. How can they do this to a minor girl. She has been working as a maid in their house for quite a long time.”

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that a gynaecologist was arrested in Assam's Lakhimpur district for allegedly attempting to rape a woman, who sought the job of a nurse at his hospital, a police officer said. The accused was taken into custody. The doctor has been identified as a gynaecologist and the proprietor of the Avaneesh Hospital & Research Center, located in North Lakhimpur town.
