Cancel licenses of Doctors who performed Tubectomy of 24 women Without Anaesthesia: NCW demands escalate
Patna: Taking cognizance of the shocking incident at two primary health centres in Bihar's Khagaria district where at least 24 women were allegedly made to undergo tubectomy without anaesthesia by doctors and medical personnel. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought to revoke the medical license of doctors who reportedly conducted surgery at a Bihar hospital.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Tubectomy operation on 24 rural women in Bihar had shocked everyone because the public health centres in Khagaria district that conducted the operation did not apply anaesthesia on the patients. Instead, those women were operated on in conscious condition while they cried out of extreme pain during the surgeries.
After receiving the complaints from the patients, the DM of Khagaria district has directed the Civil Surgeon to investigate the matter and submit the report at the earliest. The Civil Surgeon has already asked the in-charge of those two health centres to submit clarifications.
Based on their report, the authorities will take action against the two NGOs that had organized the family planning surgeries.
Altogether 53 women underwent the tubectomy operations at the two health centres in Bihar's Khagaria district. Accordingly to the standard practice of conducting tubectomy operation, the doctors use local anaesthesia for the procedure.
According to media reports, around 24 women who had opted for tubectomy at two state-run public health centres in Bihar's Khagaria district over the weekend were allegedly made to undergo the surgical procedure to prevent pregnancy without anaesthesia.
While the patients complained of extreme pain and claimed to be conscious throughout the surgery, one of the health centres claimed that even though anaesthesia had been used, it didn't work on some of the women.
Taking cognisance, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Bihar chief secretary to take strict action against the NGOs, doctors, and all those involved. ''NCW has asked that the doctors' registrations be revoked for medical negligence & not following due procedure,'' the NCW said in a tweet.
