Chennai doctor arrested for abetting wife's suicide after alleged dowry harassment

Doctor arrested
Chennai: A 31-year-old doctor has been arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, also a doctor, to suicide in August 2025 due to dowry harassment, according to an official inquiry conducted by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) of Thirumangalam.
As per a latest TNIE news report, the enquiry report indicated that dowry harassment was the reason behind the suicide of his doctor wife. The report revealed that the accused had harassed his wife after their marriage, and the same continued until August, when she took the extreme step.
It has been reported that around 11 months after their marriage, the doctor ended her life. The deceased worked at a private hospital in Anna Nagar, while the accused was employed as a researcher.

According to the police, the duo were from Arakkonam in Ranipet district and had completed their MBBS together at the Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital in 2016. The couple got married in September 2024.
During the marriage, her family had given 30 sovereigns of gold as dowry to the accused's family. However, even after marriage, the accused and his family allegedly pressured her for a car, extra cash and a new house in the Mogappair West locality.
Following her death, an RDO-level inquiry was initiated. In October, the RDO submitted a report confirming that the deceased had indeed faced dowry-related harassment, reports TNIE.
Based on the report findings, the police registered a case and arrested the doctor, who is currently remanded in judicial custody.
