Class 12 pass posing as Gynaecologist nabbed after 9 years of botched surgery

New Delhi: A 48-year-old woman, who allegedly posed as a gynaecologist using a fake Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery (BAMS) degree despite only having completed Class 12 education, was recently arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch after being on the run for nine years. In 2009, she administered medicines and performed a botched surgery on a pregnant woman, resulting in the patient's death.

According to the police, the accused opened her clinic in 2008 without possessing a medical degree or license. She had worked as an assistant at a clinic in Uttam Nagar during 2005-06, where she picked up basic treatment procedures. Later, she procured a fake BAMS degree from Bihar and began operating her own clinic, primarily catering to gynaecological patients.

The fake doctor has been arrested under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 27 of the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997. She was nabbed from Greater Kailash-II, where she had been working as a caretaker for a senior citizen.

PTI has reported that the incident dates back to 2009, when Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Ranhola, admitted his pregnant wife to the accused's clinic due to abdominal pain. The accused administered medication and discharged her. However, when the pain continued, the woman was readmitted the following day and underwent surgery on the accused’s recommendation. After being discharged again, her condition deteriorated, and she was shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where she later died.

Subsequent investigations revealed the accused had no formal medical education and had allegedly forged her credentials. She was arrested but later granted bail. In 2016, after failing to appear in court, she was declared a proclaimed offender. Despite having studied only up to Class 12, she had allegedly obtained a forged BAMS degree from Bihar and opened a clinic in Vikas Nagar, Ranhola, in 2008, where she posed as a doctor and primarily treated gynaecological patients.

To avoid arrest, the accused frequently changed her mobile phone number and location. However, the Crime Branch received a tip-off about her presence in Greater Kailash. Acting on this information, the police conducted a raid at a residence in GK-II on Tuesday and apprehended her.

“She frequently changed her number and the location. Presently, she was working as a caretaker to a senior citizen in Greater Kailash-II,” DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam told The Indian Express.

"During interrogation, she confessed to learning basic treatment while assisting a doctor in Uttam Nagar in 2005-06. She later arranged a forged degree and opened her clinic. She had kept changing locations to evade arrest," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Aditya Gautam said in the statement.
