CNCI Kolkata doctor assaulted in road rage after returning from duty

Kolkata: A 45-year-old doctor from Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) Kolkata, was allegedly assaulted in a road rage incident while returning home from duty.
The incident took place around 6.45 pm on Friday on Hazra Road when the doctor was driving back to Nayabad from the hospital. According to his complaint, four men riding two motorcycles intercepted his car near Hazra Law College, alleging that he had driven dangerously close to them. What followed, he stated, was an aggressive confrontation that escalated into physical assault.
According to a report by The Times of India, the doctor described the sequence of events in his statement to the police and said, “I was driving along Hazra Road and concentrating on navigating the evening traffic when the incident unfolded. The four bikers cut into my path and began abusing and threatening me. They appeared intoxicated and extremely aggressive,” he said.
He further stated that when he suggested resolving the matter in the presence of nearby traffic police, the group became more agitated. He said that his car window was only partially open, due to which he managed to avoid an initial attempt to assault him and proceeded toward the traffic police post at Ballygunge Phari. However, when forced to stop at a traffic signal, he stepped out of the vehicle and moved toward the post seeking assistance. The men allegedly followed him and struck him near his left ear with fists.
Despite alerting the on-duty sergeant, the situation kept escalating. The group allegedly entered the traffic post and continued to verbally abuse him, and struck him again near the left ear in the officer’s presence.
“Even as I was describing my situation and seeking help from the sergeant, they came there again and surrounded me. I asked them to keep a safe distance, but they continued to abuse and threaten me. They then struck me again near my left ear in front of the traffic policeman,” he told TOI.
The doctor later sought primary treatment at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan. He has appealed for a thorough investigation, judicial action, and examination of CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events. He also claimed that dashcam footage from his vehicle captured the assailants stopping their motorcycles and advancing toward him.
An FIR has been registered at Gariahat Police Station. An investigating officer told TOI, “We suspect they are regulars who come to Ballygunge Phari in the evenings. We have detained a few persons and hope to make arrests soon.” Police have identified the four accused as residents of a nearby slum cluster, and the investigation is ongoing.
