Dean Appointment: Overdue tenure violates AIIMS Nagpur's Regulation
Nagpur: The situation at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur regarding the appointment of new deans appears to be challenging as no new appointment has occurred in the last five years since the inception of the institution.
Due to a lack of recruitment of new deans by the government, the incumbents continue to hold the office beyond their prescribed tenure which is potentially violating the regulation.
As per the Act, the tenure of the dean and associate deans shall be for a maximum of three years and is further extendable for one more term by the institute in consultation with the director.

According to an official, a proposal was prepared to make fresh appointments but the previous executive director left it up to the full-time officer. Since then, no new recruitment of deans has taken place at the institute.
Following this, the rotational basis for filling the dean's post to encourage faculty members seems to have been overlooked, TOI reports.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that Dr Prashant P Joshi was appointed Executive Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur.
Dr Joshi has assumed the position of executive director of AIIMS Nagpur following the completion of Dr M Hanumantha Rao's tenure. In this regard, a formal announcement was made on February 3rd. Previously, Dr Joshi served as the Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, AIIMS, Nagpur and was also the Officer on Special Duty (OSD). He is also an ex-professor and Head of Medicine at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). Hailing from Nagpur, Dr Joshi completed his MBBS, MD (General Medicine) from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and his MSc (Clinical Epidemiology, UNC, Australia) in 1995.
