Delhi: Hundreds of Doctors march at Rajghat demanding protection against violence
New Delhi: In an major display of solidarity, a hundreds of doctors convened at Rajghat, New Delhi, emphasizing an ongoing concern for healthcare professionals: violence against them. The march under the banner "Chalo Rajghat" organized on Sunday, underlined the growing distress and vulnerability faced by medical professionals in their line of duty.
The rally saw number of medical associations participate. Convened by Delhi Medical Association, the rally also saw young doctors under the banner of FORDA, Maulana Azad Medical College RDA, Lady Harding Medical College RDA, UCMD RDA, and FAIMA join in large numbers
Originating from Maulana Azad Medical College, the doctors' rally intended to proceed towards the Rajghat. However, their march was stymied by heavy police barricades, preventing their progression. Regardless, the protest witnessed unwavering spirits as doctors sat on the road for more than an hour, expressing their dissent and demanding safety and respect in their workplace.
A statement from the Delhi medical association, under Dr Ashwani Dalmiya highlighted their concern: "Doctors protested against the unfair treatment by the authorities and repeated violence against healthcare workers." Such violence and mistreatment are not only disturbing from a humanitarian perspective but also pose significant challenges to the delivery of optimal healthcare.
The overwhelming response from the medical community was evident with more than 100 ambulances joining the rally. Additionally, representatives from nursing homes, the Indian Dental Association, its members, and resident doctors' associations of various Delhi hospitals also participated.
While it’s concerning to see the very pillars of our healthcare system, the doctors, and allied professionals, being compelled to march for their safety, it’s also a testament to their unity and commitment to their profession. Such events prompt society and authorities to reflect on the treatment and safety mechanisms in place for those who work tirelessly for our health and wellbeing.
The rally concluded at Shaheedi Park near ITO, but the message it carried is one that needs to be heeded by policymakers and society at large. Respecting, safeguarding, and recognizing the sacrifices and efforts of our medical professionals isn't just a demand – it's an obligation.
