MAMC PG radio Death: Delhi Medical Council takes suo motu cognizance, sets up panel

New Delhi: Taking suo motu cognizance of the unfortunate death of MAMC Radiodiagnosis Medico, the Delhi Medical Council has formed a six-member committee to enquire into the matter.

The panel comprises of Delhi Medical Council's President Dr Arun Gupta as chairman, with 5 additional members including Dr Prem Aggarwal, Dr Ashwini Dalmiya, Dr Manish Kumath, Dr Anuj Mittal and Medical Council Secretary Dr Girish Tyagi.

Issuing a notice in this regard, the medical council stated, “Delhi Medical Council has taken suo moto cognizance of recent suicide by PG Resident of Maulana Azad Medical Council. It noted with concern that the incidences of suicide by medical students and doctors are increasing in various medical institutions."

According to a notification by the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) on Tuesday, incidences of suicide by medical students and doctors are increasing in various medical institutions.

“It has also been noted with great sorrow and distress that two medical students have committed suicide in Delhi. Maulana Azad Medical College in the last couple of months,” it said.

The DMC has formed a 'fact-finding committee' to investigate the matter and the overall conditions of medical institutions, the notification said, adding the panel would also give its recommendations to improve the condition.

"in this regard a Fact Finding Committee is constituted to look into the matter. They will look specifically into these incidences and also the overall conditions in medical institutions,” the notice read.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the 25-year-old postgraduate student from the Radio-diagnosis Department of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) in Central Delhi was found dead in his room.

Since no suicide note was found at the scene, the exact circumstances and motivations behind the death was unclear. However, Police informed that there were no signs of foul play yet and suicide was suspected.

The deceased doctor was a bright student and secured All India Rank 1 in the National Eligibility-and-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) exam held in 2017 and thereafter pursued MBBS from MAMC.
