Dhubri police arrest 3 over alleged Rs 3 lakh extortion demand targeting doctor

Extortion
Dhubri: A doctor in Dhubri was allegedly threatened and forced to pay Rs 85,000 after a group of four men demanded Rs 3 lakh from him, police sources said. Three of the accused have been arrested in connection with the alleged extortion attempt, while another accused remains absconding.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly targeted a medical practitioner on Sunday and demanded Rs 3 lakh. The doctor, reportedly fearing for his safety, allegedly paid Rs 65,000 through PhonePe as an advance and handed over another Rs 20,000 in cash at the spot to the owner of an under-construction medical shop and chamber.
The doctor later lodged a complaint at Dhubri Sadar Police Station, following which police launched an investigation and arrested three of the alleged accused.
During the investigation, police also traced the Rs 65,000 digital payment to an account belonging to a resident of the Fakirganj area. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
A case, Dhubri Sadar Police Station Case No. 354/2026, has been registered under Sections 61(2), 329(4), 127(2), 308(5), 309(4), 351(2), 351(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), reports NE Today.
Police have launched a search operation to trace another accused, who remains absconding. Further investigation into the alleged extortion attempt and the financial transactions is underway.
