Distinguished Cardiologist Dr Charnjit Singh Pruthi takes charge as Punjab Medical Council President

Chandigarh: Renowned cardiologist of northern India, Dr Charnjit Singh Pruthi has recently been appointed as the President of the Punjab Medical Council. He has been assigned the position for the next 5 years.

Previously Dr A.S. Sekhon was serving as the president of the medical body. However, he resigned from his post, six months before the completion of his tenure. He had submitted his resignation to the government on December 1.

Days after his resignation, Dr Pruthi took over as the President of the Punjab Medical Council. After assuming the office at the Punjab Medical Education and Research Bhawan, Dr Pruthi thanked the Chief Minister Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi, and Medical Education and Research Minister Dr Raj Kumar Verka for providing this new opportunity.

Dr Pruthi was born on December 2, 1953, in Jagraon (Ludhiana). He obtained an MBBS degree in 1977 and M.D. (Medicine) degree in 1982 from Government Medical College, Amritsar. He also received a Fellowship in Cardiology. Dr. Pruthi has served in various medical institutions. He has participated in many national and international conferences. In 1995, he has started northern India's first open-heart surgery center under the name of BBC Heart Care Pruthi Hospital, Jalandhar. He is its Chairman cum Director. He is also chairman of Capitol Hospital Jalandhar. He has made Capitol Hospital among one of the rare medical facilities which provide comprehensive treatment to cancer patients along with treating other complicated diseases.

Dr Pruthi told Medical Dialogues, " I have been working in the medical field since 1983. I will use the experience gained in the medical field to improve the working of the Medical Council and will carry out this new responsibility with a spirit of honesty and dedication. I am thankful to the authorities for giving me the opportunity. I would make sure that any unwanted complaints against doctors are dealt with responsibly. It has been years since the consumer forum became active but during the COVID period the relationship between doctors and patients received severe blows due to unfortunate circumstances."

"I, as a PMC president, would definitely try to improve the patient-doctor relationship. The cases of violence against the doctors would be dealt with seriousness. Then again I will ensure that doctors will maintain the ethical practices as per the guidelines of the Punjab Medical Council. It is also important that administration should be strengthened so that doctors face no difficulty in license renewal. We want Punjab healthcare to achieve a milestone, if we start from today by taking one step at a time, we will soon achieve it", added Dr Pruthi.

Extending his best wishes to the new president, former PMC President, Dr. A.S. Sekhon stated, " It has been a long and glorious journey for me. I completed many of the pending tasks of PMC efficiently under my watch. I am happy that a capable and famous doctor like Dr. Pruthi will take charge of PMC now. I wish him all the best for his future ventures."
