Punjab Medical Council President Dr AS Sekhon resigns
Patiala: The president of the Punjab Medical Council (PMC), Dr Amar Satinder Singh Sekhon has resigned from his post, six months before the completion of his tenure. He submitted his resignation to the government on December 1.
In his resignation letter to the Principal Secretary, Department of Medical Education and Research, Dr Sekhon, who was Dean of Gian Sagar Group of Institutions stated that he be relieved from his assignment immediately.
The doctor was in controversy after the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) now National Medical Commission (NMC) cancelled the registration of the doctor for a period of 3 years for allegedly furnishing false information during an erstwhile MCI inspection, showing a private practitioner in Ludhiana as a full time faculty of Microbiology at the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bathinda.

According to a recent media report in The Tribune, the doctor was a loyalist of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who was posted as the president within the first few weeks of his assuming office.
He was appointed as the President of the Punjab Medical Council on June 1, 2017 with his five year term due to expire on May 31, 2022.
He has presented around 100 research papers at different conferences and got published in many medical journals. He was a national President of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) and was also the recipient of the fellowship of IAPSM.
He retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine in the Government Medical College Patiala and Medical Superintendent of Rajindra Hospital in 2003, following which he worked as Registrar of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences till 2005.
From 2005 to 2006, he was also appointed as the Director Principal of Adesh Medical College, Bathinda after which he moved to the Gian Sagar Medical College in 2006. He joined as the dean after Gian Sagar Medical College was revived in 2018 and eventually left the group in August 2021.
He served at the army for five years and is a 1971 war veteran, reports TOI.
