Doctor allegedly assaulted at Odisha Health Centre, critical; 3 arrested

Cuttack: In a shocking incident, a doctor was allegedly assaulted by five men at Manibandha Community Health Centre (CHC) in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Saturday while treating a patient who reportedly fell seriously ill after consuming alcohol. Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident, following a complaint.
The doctor is reported to be in critical condition. He was allegedly attacked while treating a resident of Kashikiari village at the healthcare facility in Badamba block.

According to the complaint, the patient was brought to Manibandha CHC by five of his friends after his health deteriorated following alcohol consumption.
While attending to the patient, the doctor reportedly advised him to take potash water and asked him several questions to assess his condition.
However, the patient’s friends became agitated over the doctor’s actions and attacked him. They reportedly threw a bucket containing the solution at the doctor before assaulting him. The attack left the doctor seriously injured, prompting his transfer to Cuttack for further treatment, Odisha TV reported.
Following a complaint lodged in connection with the incident, police arrested three people allegedly involved in the assault. Further details regarding the identities of the accused and the progress of the investigation were awaited.
The alleged attack has once again highlighted concerns about the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers, particularly those handling medical emergencies.
Medical professionals are often required to make urgent decisions while treating patients in critical condition. Ensuring their safety at healthcare facilities is essential to allowing them to carry out their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a 58-year-old medical practitioner in Pimple Nilakh was allegedly abused and assaulted by a pharmacist and his family members over the practitioner's decision to refer patients to another pharmacy instead of the pharmacy owned by the accused.
