Doctor attacked by prison inmate in Vadodara

Vadodara: A doctor while visiting the Vadodara Central jail for a health check-up of the prisoners was allegedly assaulted by an inmate on the morning of Tuesday, 2nd May 2023.

The doctor was visiting the jail to examine the health of the jail inmates when the incident took place. The prisoner, identified as Mitul Patel had hit the doctor with a brick while he was examining the blood pressure of another inmate.

When the doctor fell after the first hit, the inmate attempted to hit him again but was overpowered by other people.

The doctor received head injuries from the hit. He was taken to SSG Hospital and his condition is reported to be currently stable, as per a media report in the Times of India.

The doctor said that Patel is not his patient and added that he doesn't know why Patel attacked him. A case of assault has been registered against Patel at the Raopura police station.

As per a media report in Pipanews, the doctor has been working as a general physician for the past 12 years in the central jail. Soon after the assault, a prison staff rushed to the place and took Patel away. The police have begun their investigation.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that around twenty-three years after a woman ASI had manhandled a doctor along with his family members in connection with a dowry case, the Supreme Court has now ordered an FIR against the concerned officer and other police personnel. The concerned officer, who has now been promoted to the post of DSP, had allegedly dragged the doctor and his kin by the hair and manhandled them. Even though a lower court had earlier directed for registering an FIR against the police officers, the order was later quashed by the High Court bench as it noted that a sanction for prosecution was necessary.
