Dr Asima Banu takes charge as principal of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute
Bengaluru: In a recent appointment, microbiologist and virologist Dr Asima Banu has been given charge as the new principal of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), on Wednesday.
Dr Asima Banu was born and brought up in Chamrajpet of Bengaluru. She is completing 23 years of active service in BMCRI. Her journey at BMCRI began in the 1990s when she completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the institute.
In 2000, she joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology and has held various key positions including Quality Supervisor, Infection Control Officer, Head of the Microbiology Department at Bowring Hospital, Convener of the Medical Education Unit and Nodal Officer.
As per a media report in The Cognate, her contributions during the challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic had won widespread appreciation. In 2020, Dr Banu served as the Nodal Officer of the Covid Ward at Victoria Hospital Trauma Care Centre. Her priority for patient care and well-being was commendable as she implemented innovative measures to ensure the recovery of COVID-19 patients.
The success of the COVID-19 mission at Bangalore Medical College was Dr Asima’s quick thinking of starting a WhatsApp group with all of the patients. Dr Asima would share regular reminders about medicines, immunity booster foods and even exercises that patients could do to keep themselves fit.
She also served as co-convener of the medical education unit and commissioned the simulation centre of BMCRI in 2018 and was the first Nodal Officer of the simulation centre for 3 years.
She successfully completed her tenure as a Nodal officer of the trauma care centre of 6 years in September 2021 and now handling the new challenge of infection control in Vani Vilas Hospital along with the infection monitoring of the breast milk bank at Vani Vilas hospitals attached to BMCRI.
