Mangaluru: Dr. K. Sudhakar Shetty, a pioneering psychiatrist, passed away on Saturday at the age of 93 due to age-related illness. He laid the foundation for the Department of Psychiatry at Father Muller’s Hospital, Mangaluru, and dedicated 52 years of service to the institution.
Born on April 16, 1933, Dr. Shetty earned his MD in Psychiatry from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, an achievement that placed him among the earliest formally trained psychiatrists in the country. In 1965, he laid the foundation for the department of psychiatry at Father Muller's Hospital, nurturing it into a centre of trust and healing.

At a time when psychiatry was widely misunderstood and often neglected, he emerged as a compassionate clinician. Over his long and distinguished career, Dr. Shetty touched the lives of lakhs of patients and families across the region.
Dr Shetty’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he healed, the professionals he mentored and inspired, and the enduring standards of empathy, ethics, and excellence he set for generations of mental health practitioners. He will be remembered not only as an outstanding clinician and academician but as a deeply humane physician, reports Daijiworld.
As per the news reports by Hindu, He was 93 and is survived by his children Rajesh Shetty, a neurologist and director of First Neuro Hospital, Mangaluru, and Rakesh Shetty.
