Eminent Diabetologist Dr V Mohan wins two US prestigious awards for diabetes research
Chennai: Eminent diabetologist Padma Shri Dr Viswanathan Mohan, the founder of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre was honoured with two prestigious awards in the United States on Thursday.
He became the first Indian to receive the awards in the field of diabetes research. The two prestigious awards include the Kelly West Award for epidemiology by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the Emory EGDRC Distinguished Lecture from Emory University.
Kelly West Award is given in memory of Kelly M. West, widely regarded as the “father of diabetes epidemiology”, to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology.

As per a FE news report, the award includes a lecture at the American Diabetes Association which was later published in their journal ‘Diabetes Care’. Delighted at being honoured with this, speaking from the US, he says, the topic of his lecture would be ‘what have we learnt about the epidemiology of diabetes in South Asians."
Similarly, Dr Mohan was awarded the Emory EGDRC Distinguished Lecture making him the first Indian to receive the award. Speaking to the Daily, Dr Mohan said, “Here, I will be talking about the 20 years of Emory University-Madras Diabetes Research Foundation collaboration."
Dr V Mohan is the Chairman and Chief of Diabetology at Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre at Chennai in South India which is an IDF Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care. Dr Mohan oversees a chain of 48 diabetes centres across 8 states of India and has over 500,000 registered diabetes patients in his centres. He is also President and Director of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation which is Asia’s largest stand-alone diabetes research centre.
Deeply interested in research from his undergraduate medical student days, Dr Mohan has published over 1330 papers in peer-reviewed journals. This includes 864 original articles, 307 review articles and invited editorials and 162 chapters to textbooks on Diabetes. His research has attracted 135,000 citations a ‘h index’ of 135.
Dr Mohan has trained a large number of physicians & diabetologists in addition to Nurses, Educators and received over 180 awards including the prestigious Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian award for his extensive contribution in the field of diabetes in 2012, Dr B.C. Roy National Award by the Medical Council of India and the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Centenary Award from the Indian Council of Medical Research, the highest award for Biomedical research in India.
He was conferred the Dr Harold Rifkin Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes Award by the American Diabetes Association and he is the first Indian to receive this award. Recently he has been conferred the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). Dr Mohan is one of the few medical doctors in India to have been awarded the FRSE.
