Eminent Silchar paediatrician Dr Malay Chakrabarty passes away at 86

Silchar: Veteran physician and eminent paediatrician Dr Malay Chakrabarty has died at the age of 86 at a private nursing home in Silchar, Assam, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning several decades.

Born on January 1, 1946, in Sylhet district of undivided India, Dr Chakrabarty completed his ICS from Karimganj College and earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong. He completed his MBBS from Gauhati Medical College and obtained an MD from Patna Medical College.

Dr Chakrabarty made significant contributions to the development of paediatrics in Assam and was the first doctor in the state to obtain an MD in the speciality.

During his long and illustrious professional career, Dr Chakrabarty served at all three major medical colleges in Assam. He eventually joined Silchar Medical College and Hospital, from where he retired after years of dedicated service, reports the Daily.

As per Sentinel, Dr Chakrabarty is survived by a daughter and a son. The last rites of Dr Chakrabarty were performed on Sunday after his son, who is presently working at Kokrajhar Medical College, reached in the morning.

Tributes poured in following his death. In a post on X, former Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the veteran paediatrician and remembered him as a renowned child specialist of the Barak Valley and a compassionate friend of the poor and needy.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Moloy Kanti Chakraborty, renowned child specialist of Barak Valley. More than a doctor, he was a true friend to the poor and needy, serving with compassion. May his noble soul rest in peace,” Das wrote.
