Fake BAMS doctor arrested in abortion racket

Malegaon: An illegal abortion racket operating under the guise of an Ayurveda clinic was recently uncovered in the city. Acting on confidential information, the Local Crime Branch, along with the Municipal Health Department, raided the clinic in the Soygaon area and arrested five people, including a fake BAMS doctor.

According to the police, the racket involved conducting gender determination tests and abortions, allegedly leading to cases of female foeticide. The clinic, named Sai Sanjeevani Sevabhavi Clinic, had gained local trust by claiming to provide Ayurvedic treatment, which attracted a large number of patients. However, behind this front, illegal medical practices were being carried out.

During the raid on Wednesday night, officers found abortion-related medicines and equipment at the centre. They also came across a woman who had travelled from Yeola seeking an abortion, which further exposed the ongoing malpractice.

As per the Free Press Journal media report, the main accused, identified as Sandeep Sawant, claimed to hold a BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) degree. However, police confirmed that he did not possess the necessary qualification or licence to perform abortions. His four accomplices were also found to have no valid medical certificates.

A case has been registered against Sawant and his associates at Camp Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Medical dialogues had earlier reported that a young man holding only a diploma in patient care assistance was caught treating patients at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, pretending to be his friend, who is a medical intern at the hospital. He was seen roaming around the OPD ward and even the trauma centre, wearing a white coat with a stethoscope around his neck, and attending to patients.
