FIR against Kannur Hospital anaesthetist over 18-month-old's death

Kannur: Following the death of an 18-month-old boy who allegedly developed severe complications after being administered anaesthesia for a lip injury, the Payyannur Police have booked a private hospital anaesthetist on charges of medical negligence.
According to reports, the FIR was registered based on a complaint filed by the child's family, and police have initiated an investigation to determine whether any medical negligence occurred.
The toddler reportedly sustained a cut on his lip after falling while playing in the courtyard of his house on July 5. He was taken to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, where doctors administered anaesthesia to stitch the wound.
The family alleged that the child's condition deteriorated immediately after the anaesthesia was administered, and he never regained consciousness. He was later shifted to the hospital's Kannur unit for advanced treatment, where he died on July 10 after remaining critical for five days.
Following the family's complaint alleging negligence in the administration of anaesthesia, the Payyannur Police registered a case against the anaesthetist. The FIR was lodged under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to acts endangering human life or personal safety.

The hospital, however, has denied the allegations and maintained that the treatment was provided according to established medical protocols. According to the hospital, the child suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after receiving anaesthesia and was immediately placed on ventilator support before being shifted for advanced treatment.
The hospital further stated that complications related to anaesthesia can occur despite appropriate dosage and adherence to standard medical protocols, and said it would extend full cooperation in the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
As per a report by India Today, Baby Memorial Hospital expressed grief over the child's death and stated that all medical care was provided in accordance with accepted medical standards. The hospital said the child received all available modern medical treatment and assured that it would extend full cooperation and support during the legal proceedings.
The postmortem examination is expected to help determine the exact cause of death.
