First: Indian Surgeon Dr Raghu Ram Elected to 425-Year-Old RCPSG Governing Council

Hyderabad: In an big milestone, Dr Raghu Ram, Founding Director at KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases, has become the first and only surgeon from India to be elected onto to the apex Governing Council of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG).
RCPSG is a 425-year-old Institution, one of the world’s oldest & the only Multidisciplinary Royal College in United Kingdom and Ireland that represents surgeons, physicians, dentists, podiatrists, and travel-medicine specialists across 97 countries worldwide.
The results of the Election to the Executive Board and Governing Council were announced by Prof Hany Eteiba, President RCPSG during the Annual General Body Meeting (GBM) held at the College in Glasgow on 5 December 2025.
There is only one dedicated position on the Governing Council of the RCPSG for a surgeon practising outside the UK, and this year’s election created history: for the first time in the combined 500-plus–year legacy of all UK Royal Colleges, 26 surgeons from across the globe contested for this single seat — making the victory both rare and remarkable.
As a Governing Council Member for the 2025–2028 term, Dr P Raghu Ram will uniquely represent the RCPSG across all countries outside the UK. Since the year 2000, Dr. Raghu Ram has played a truly pioneering role in convening 12 overseas FRCS/MRCS preparatory courses in Hyderabad, empowering over 2,000 trainees from across South Asia to realise their aspirations in these prestigious examinations.
His steadfast commitment and strategic guidance have significantly strengthened the College’s academic footprint in India. Prof. Hany Eteiba, President of RCPSG said: “A record 26 nominations were received from all over the world and my heartiest congratulations to Dr P Raghu Ram on this historic achievement as the first practising surgeon from India to be elected to our College Council.
His election enriches our College and we are immensely proud to welcome him onto the College Council.” Speaking on this prestigious global role, Dr. Raghu Ram said: “I am profoundly grateful to the Members and Fellows of RCPSG across the world for this historic mandate. I dedicate this high honour to my family, my teachers, my patients, my colleagues and my motherland.
My mission is to strengthen professional development and to champion the College’s global presence, driven by an unwavering commitment to integrity, inclusivity, and excellence.” An Officer of the Most Excellent Order of British Empire (OBE), Padma Shri and Dr. B.C. Roy National Award recipient, Dr P Raghu Ram was also recently conferred the Honorary FRCS (Glasgow) — the highest honour bestowed by the College. He holds the unique distinction of being both an FRCS by examination and an Honorary Fellow of the same College — a rare honour achieved by very few worldwide.
