First take Treatment, then extort money from doctor on medical negligence claims: Gujarat Police busts new racket
Gujarat: Wondering about the rising medical negligence claims against doctors?
Well, some people seem to have made a business around it.
A devious scheme to exploit medical professionals by blackmailing them with medical negligence was uncovered when Morbi police here apprehended a 25-year-old habitual criminal, one Ravirajsinh Jadeja, along with seven accomplices from a Maharashtra gang on Thursday. Jadeja had concocted a plan to defraud doctors by falsely accusing them of malpractice, medical negligence, and adverse drug reactions after taking treatment from them.
This elaborate ruse took a more dangerous turn when Jadeja employed a gang to ambush an ayurvedic practitioner from Ahmedabad, one Dr. Rajput. They were, however, caught in time by the police before they could do more damage.
The incident originated months earlier, when Jadeja visited Dr. Rajput, feigning illness. A dispute broke out during one of the visits, with Jadeja claiming that Dr. Rajput's prescribed medications had caused serious side effects. The confrontation escalated into a demand for compensation, but when Dr. Rajput involved the police, Jadeja went back on his accusations, apologizing to avoid arrest. Despite the resolution, Jadeja harbored resentment and threatened the doctor.
Bent on revenge, the man then decided to rob the doctor and enlisted a few gang members to carry out the job tailing the doctors every move around his day
According to a recent report in Times of India, during this period, the Wankaner city police and Morbi local crime branch were tipped off about the Maharashtra gang's suspicious activities in the region, potentially planning robberies and lootings. Surveillance led to a late-night interception of two vehicles carrying four of the gang members at 1:30 am on Thursday. The search of their cars revealed an alarming cache of weapons, including a pistol, an airgun, live cartridges, knives, and iron pipes.
The subsequent investigation led to Jadeja's capture along with the rest of the gang having 6 more members including a minor. The group, originally from Maharashtra with some members residing in Ahmedabad, had planned not only to rob Dr. Rajput but also to abduct him for ransom if their initial plan failed.
