GMC Handwara Associate Professor's engagement cancelled over non-compliance

Associate Professor
Srinagar: An Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Handwara, has had his engagement cancelled by the Jammu and Kashmir Government for non-compliance with the terms and conditions of his appointment.
In a Government Order No. 590-JK(HME) of 2026 issued on Wednesday, the Health and Medical Education Department stated that the doctor’s engagement, made under the provisions of S.O. 364 of 2020, would stand cancelled ab initio.
As per the government order, the doctor joined GMC Handwara on January 13, 2026. However, the Principal of the medical college later reported that he did not attend his assigned duties after joining the institution.
The department said he was asked to resume duties through a communication issued on February 6. However, he submitted his resignation the following day without serving the mandatory notice period prescribed under S.O. 364 of 2020, reports Kashmir Life.
After reviewing the matter, the Health and Medical Education Department concluded that the faculty member neither performed the assigned duties after joining the institution nor fulfilled the conditions applicable to resignation under the governing rules.
S.O. 364 of 2020 lays down the terms and conditions for engagement of faculty members in government medical colleges on an academic arrangement basis. The provisions include requirements related to service obligations, resignation procedures, and the mandatory notice period to be followed by faculty members.
The department’s decision highlights the government’s emphasis on adherence to contractual and academic service norms for faculty appointments in medical institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a senior cardiologist at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, has been suspended by the Jammu and Kashmir government following allegations of irregularities in the reporting of cardiac procedures under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). The doctor has denied the allegations, calling the procedures clinically justified, while the case has triggered debate within the medical community.
