Gurugram doctor duped of Rs 50 lakh on pretext of high returns on foreign currency investment

Gurugram: In another cyber fraud case, a Gurugram-based doctor was allegedly cheated of Rs 50 lakh by a woman who promised high returns in a foreign currency investment.

The doctor working at the surgical oncology department at a hospital in Gurugram lost money after he fell victim to a fraudster who claimed to provide financial advice and high returns on investment in foreign currencies.

As per The Indian Express news report, the scam began when a woman befriended the doctor on social media and the doctor invested his money periodically after trusting her with financial advice.

In his complaint, the doctor said, “A woman befriended me on social media, and she then carried on the conversation on Telegram. After gaining my trust, she said she could offer me advice on gaining maximum return from foreign currency investments.”

“The woman asked me to try out a website. I invested Rs 40,000 at first and was shown a huge profit after which I was told to withdraw Rs 5,200. Lured by more returns over time, I invested more money and by May, I had increased my investment to Rs 23 lakh," he added.

The scam escalated as the woman instructed the doctor to invest further and pay a tax of $9,000 for a projected profit of $30,000. Over time, the doctor continued to pay these so-called taxes, ultimately investing Rs 50 lakh, including regular tax payments.

Two months after befriending him, the woman blocked all contact, leaving the doctor unable to reach her via mobile phone or WhatsApp. Realizing he had been duped, he approached the police.

A case has been registered under section 420 (cheating) of IPC at the Cyber Police Station of South district and an investigation is underway.
