Nagpur: Days after a first-year female postgraduate medico at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (Mayo) filed a sexual harassment complaint against the Head of the Forensic Medicine Department, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused professor following preliminary findings.

According to the FIR, the PG medico accused the professor of mentally tormenting her, making inappropriate gestures, and offering undue favours over the past nine months. She claimed that when she refused to comply with his requests, the professor insulted and humiliated her, and even allegedly threatened to cancel her PG seat. The sexual and mental harassment reportedly continued for a long time, and when she could no longer bear it, she approached the police.

The FIR was registered after the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and IGGMC MARD Nagpur demanded swift action from the police. Central MARD General Secretary Dr Suyash Dhavane and IGGMC MARD President Dr Aditya Thete met the Nagpur Police Commissioner and urged him to immediately convert the complaint into an FIR. Medical Dialogues had reported that the association warned that any delay could weaken the investigation and allow the accused to influence witnesses or tamper with evidence.

Following this, the professor has been booked, and an investigation is underway in this regard.

However, TOI sources close to the accused professor said he is a strict, no-nonsense person and faced opposition from a section of the students.

According to the complainant, the ordeal started between February 3 and November 19, 2025, when the professor allegedly began repeatedly troubling her at work. She claimed he would call her to his cabin frequently, ask her to sit close to him, and speak in a low tone to make her uncomfortable.

In one instance, she claimed that the professor asked her to take her apron off when he called her into his cabin to check her synopsis. She also alleged that he instructed her to come to work in a “special manner,” which she found inappropriate and humiliating.

The doctor further said that whenever she refused to follow his directions, the professor publicly scolded and insulted her. He allegedly warned her that he could end her career if she did not listen to him. She also stated that he would repeatedly belittle her in front of colleagues.

According to her statement, these incidents deeply affected her mental health, and she often broke down in tears. However, she said the professor would say that she was acting and advised her to stop acting, indicating that she was faking her emotional state.

As per a TOI news report, the doctor alleged that Dr **** passed unsolicited remarks about her clothes and makeup, apart from touching her inappropriately during an autopsy procedure at the mortuary in front of other doctors.

In another instance, when the survivor approached him with a leave request, the accused allegedly insisted that she write a false complaint against an associate professor in exchange for approval.

In her statement, the doctor alleged that she is not the only victim, but three other junior doctors have also faced similar harassment, who are now supporting her. The doctor decided to take action against the professor after receiving support from her colleagues, who advised her to escalate the matter, as reported by Nagpur Today.

Following this, the doctor submitted a written complaint to Mayo Hospital Dean, Dr Ravi Chavan, before approaching the police. An internal complaint committee and the medical education authorities are probing the case.

Based on her complaint and preliminary findings, the Tehsil Police registered a case against the professor under multiple sections of BNS. The professor is expected to be summoned soon for questioning.

"We learnt there were similar allegations against the senior doctor in 2015, which triggered a furore," said a senior police official.
