The miscreants followed his car on a motorcycle and overtook the doctor near Sath Mile Cross after which they opened fire at him. After the second attempt failed, the two men fled the scene.
The Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil said that the gynaecologist, Jaya Prakash Patil Bettadur was the target. Speaking to the Hindu, the SP said, "We have formed three teams of senior police officers to conduct an investigation and I am supervising it. The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. We will be able to get further information after investigation."
The Raichur Rural police have registered a case under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 341, 307 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with regard to the firing incident. They are going through the CCTV footage to identify the accused.
Two months back, the doctor received a call and a message from an unknown number demanding cryptocurrency, and a complaint was registered at the Netaji Nagar Police Station regarding the same. The number has not remained active since then.
