Kerala Govt doctors boycott OPD, warn of indefinite strike over pending demands

Thiruvananthapuram: Protesting the State Government's failure to address long-pending demands, including delayed pay revisions and staff shortages, doctors have announced a boycott of outpatient services tomorrow, i.e., on October 28, 2025.

The doctors under the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association (KGMCTA) have also warned to initiate an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.

For the last couple of months, the association has been protesting against the inaction on the part of the state government. The association commenced its protest on July 1, raising its demands.

The association has demanded to immediately resolve the irregularities in the salary of the entry cadre assistant professor post and intensify PSC appointments.

Further, it has also sought salary revision arrears immediately and urged to make permanent appointments without throwing dust in the eyes of the NMC by making unnecessary temporary transfers. Besides, KGMCTA has also urged the Government to increase the number of doctor posts in proportion to the number of patients and treatment methods, and develop basic facilities in medical colleges.

Despite holding a boycott of OP duties on a relay basis, including the OP boycott held on October 20, and making repeated appeals to the government, no solution has been offered yet. The government is not ready to resolve the issue or hold discussions, KGMCTA mentioned in a statement.

Accordingly, the association announced its decision to boycott outpatient duties on Tuesday. It further announced that the medical college doctors will not come to the OP clinics on October 28 (Tuesday), November 5 (Wednesday), November 13 (Thursday), November 21 (Friday), and November 29 (Saturday). Along with this, the theory classes of the students will also be boycotted, the release by the association added.

However, it has assured that the Casualty, Labor Room, ICU etc. Emergency treatments will be done without interruption on these days.

KGMCTA expressed its regrets for the difficulties faced by the patients on these days. It also mentioned that the organization is forced to boycott the OP because the protest programs and petitions that have been going on for years have not yielded results. It also requested the public to avoid coming to the OP on these days.

"The boycott of official meetings will continue. Along with this, no replies will be given to letters. Along with this, a protest is also being started," the association mentioned in the release.

State President Dr. Rosnara Begum T and General Secretary Dr. Aravind C.S. announced on behalf of the organization that if there is no favorable decision in the coming days, they will have to move towards an indefinite strike with greater force.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in protest against the government’s failure to address faculty and infrastructure shortages, heavy workload, and delayed pay revisions, faculty from various government medical colleges under the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) had been observed 'black day' and also held boycott of OP duties previously. Despite assurances from the state cabinet, no concrete steps have been taken to address the demands, prompting the escalation.
