KGMU resident doctor attempts suicide over alleged pressure to convert religion

Lucknow: In a tragic incident, a female resident doctor at King George's Medical University (KGMU) allegedly attempted suicide after accusing her colleague of harassing her for refusing to convert her religion for marriage.

According to the complaint, the doctor is a Hindu woman and alleged that her male colleague, who belongs to the Muslim community, emotionally exploited her and pressured her to convert to Islam to marry him. She claimed that after she refused, he continued to harass her, which pushed her into severe mental distress and led to her suicide attempt.

Following the incident, her father filed complaints on the Chief Minister’s public grievance portal and with the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission. He alleged that his daughter attempted suicide due to continuous pressure from her colleague to change her religion.

The incident took place on December 17, when she allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a large quantity of medicines inside her hostel room at KGMU. She was immediately rushed to the Trauma Centre and later shifted to the fifth floor of the Critical Care Management (CCM) ICU for advanced treatment.

As per the TOI news report, the doctor is currently undergoing treatment at KGMU, and her condition is stated to be stable. She was admitted to the KGMU Trauma Centre in critical condition, and her condition continues to be under medical care.

According to the complaint filed by her father, the doctor met the male resident doctor in July 2025 while both were studying at KGMU. They remained in regular contact, and the friendship gradually turned into a romantic relationship. The family alleged that the accused trapped their daughter in a love affair and exploited her emotionally and physically on the pretext of marriage. When discussions about marriage arose, the accused allegedly began pressuring her to convert to Islam.

The family further claimed that after she reportedly refused to change her religion, the accused ended the relationship. Since then, she suffered from severe mental stress. The complaint also stated that even after breaking up, the accused continued to mentally harass her, leaving her traumatised and fearful, reports Bhaskar.

Commenting on the matter, KGMU Spokesperson KK Singh told ANI, "An incident came to our notice through social media. After a detailed enquiry, we found that a first‑year girl student belonging to the Hindu community and a male student belonging to a minority community were involved. The girl is from West Bengal, and the boy is from Uttaranchal. They appeared to be in a relationship, as per the investigation..."

He added, "The boy allegedly forced the girl to convert to his religion as she wished to marry him. Forceful conversion led the girl into depression, and she went under psychiatric treatment and medication. She reportedly overdosed on her medicine, which had also happened previously while she was at home. The girl’s family has registered a complaint on the CM portal, but we have not yet received any formal complaint. Our Vice‑Chancellor has clearly said that if a complaint is received, all possible actions will be taken..."
