Kolkata rape-murder case outrage: 2 Doctors Resign From Medical Council Seeking Suspension of RG Kar Suspects
Kolkata: Amidst the ongoing outrage in the State following the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata-based R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, two doctors have resigned from the West Bengal Medical Council recently.
These two doctors- Suman Mukhopadhyay and Dipanjan Banerjee announced their decision to resign in a letter addressed to the President of the Council and demanded that the suspects in the RG Kar case, who are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), be suspended from participating in all council-related activities.
They both expressed how the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor had left the entire medical fraternity saddened and ashamed. Referring to the involvement of the some of the members of the Medical Council in the ongoing CBI probe, Dr. Suman Mukhopadhyay's letter stated, "Unfortunately, the names of some members of the West Bengal Medical Council have been drawn into this picture, leading to much turmoil amongst our colleagues."
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, Dr. Mukhopadhyay also demanded suspending the registration of the former principal of RGKMCH Sandip Kumar Ghosh. He was recently arrested by CBI and was taken into custody over the alleged corruption and financial irregularities in the medical college.
ABP Live has reported that writing to the Council President, Dr. Dipanjan Banerjee mentioned, "Some members of the State Medical Council have been involved in multiple controversies in the RG Kar case. This is damaging the reputation of the state medical council. To maintain the clean image of the council, the concerned members should be kept away from the council until the dispute is settled."
Meanwhile, the meeting of the West Bengal Medical Council was cancelled due to the RG Kar Scandal as it was being speculated that a heated situation might develop. ABP has reported that several doctors, including Sushant Roy, Sudeepta Roy, Abhik Dey, Virupaksh Biswas, were found implicated in the RG Kar case and many of them were allegedly seen at the scene.
The meeting scheduled for today and tomorrow have been cancelled and the State Council has informed about this to all the members via e-mail. However, no exact reason was given as to why the meeting was cancelled. Many in the medical community think that the meeting has been cancelled as it was possible that demands for removing the above-mentioned doctors amid this controversy could have arisen, the Daily has reported.
