Lucknow: BAMS doctor arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting patient after sedation, hospital sealed

Lucknow: A BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) doctor has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a patient inside the Operation Theatre (OT) of a private hospital in the Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) area of Lucknow after reportedly administering her a sedative injection, officials said.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak ordered the immediate sealing of a private hospital in the Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) area, following allegations that a doctor allegedly sexually assaulted a 12th-grade student inside the Operation Theatre (OT).

Deputy CM Pathak, who also oversees the health portfolio, directed the Health Department to immediately suspend the medical license of the accused and initiated procedures to confiscate his Ayurvedic medical degree.

The incident took place after the victim was admitted to Tejas Hospital on May 18 after suffering epileptic seizures and fever for several days. Her father alleged that on May 21, around 3 pm, she suddenly developed breathing problems during treatment.

“According to the complaint, the doctor allegedly called the patient alone into the operation theatre during treatment and asked the female staff and the victim’s father to step outside. The victim alleged that the doctor administered an intoxicating injection and sexually assaulted her,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Twinkle Jain told reporters, reports PTI.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the executive crackdown, Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, emphasised that the state will ensure maximum punishment for the accused.

"The incident reported at the BKT hospital is deeply horrifying and condemnable. It tarnishes the entire medical fraternity. The moment the matter was brought to our attention, we directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to seal Tejas Hospital with immediate effect. The license of the accused doctor has been suspended, and the legal process to revoke his medical degree is currently underway," Dy CM Pathak said.

Reaffirming the state administration's unyielding stance on women's safety, Pathak added, "The survivor and her family are enduring profound trauma. The Uttar Pradesh government stands fully supportive of them. Anyone who compromises the dignity and safety of our daughters will face the harshest legal consequences."

Law enforcement was mobilised immediately after the survivor lodged a formal complaint detailing the assault. Based on her statement, the BKT police registered a criminal case under relevant legal provisions and took the accused doctor into custody.

Simultaneously, a preliminary investigation conducted by the state health department revealed that the hospital was operating illegally without a valid license renewal, reports ANI.

Authorities have stated that comprehensive legal proceedings under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and medical regulatory laws will be rigorously pursued against the facility's management.
