Police Nab Jail Medical Staff for Running Drug Smuggling Network

Ludhiana: In a shocking case, a medical officer and a TB technician deputed at Ludhiana Central Jail were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly running a smuggling racket with the help of inmates. The accused reportedly received payments from inmates’ relatives through a UPI application in exchange for smuggling drugs and other contraband into the prison.

The arrests follow a month-long investigation triggered by a complaint filed by Jagjit Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Ludhiana Central Jail, when authorities recovered 117 intoxicating capsules and three mobile phones from inmates on October 27. Following the arrests, half of the jail’s medical staff have reportedly fled.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, ASI Dinesh Kumar, leading the investigation, said the police brought the inmates on a production warrant for questioning. During interrogations, the names of a medical officer and a TB technician surfaced, prompting the police to zero in on them. Both were arrested on Wednesday. Investigators found that the accused also referred inmates to a civil hospital under the pretext of treatment in exchange for money. Bank account scans revealed multiple suspicious transactions linked to the duo.

Authorities have indicated that additional individuals could be involved in the smuggling racket. Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are expected as the probe continues.

The incident has raised serious questions about internal monitoring mechanisms at Ludhiana Central Jail.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a doctor with a history of drug-related cases being registered at different police stations had been arrested in a new drug peddling case. He has been accused of sourcing drugs from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and distributing them in the city. This case marks the ninth arrest in an ongoing investigation into a local narcotics supply network.
