Maha women's commission probes Satara doctor case amid political controversy

Maharashtra Women’s Commission Seeks Clarity on Phaltan Doctor Case
Kolhapur: Following the police investigation into the suicide of a female doctor from Phaltan sub-district hospital, the Maharashtra State Commission for Women has reviewed the progress of the case and visited the hospital where she was posted.
Chairperson Rupali Chakankar confirmed that investigators are analysing call data records (CDRs) and other digital evidence to establish the movements and communication between the deceased and the arrested police sub-inspector (PSI).
Chakankar visited Phaltan on Monday morning, inspecting the hospital where the doctor was posted. She met Satara Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Doshi, along with health department officials, to gather detailed information about the case.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a shocking incident, a woman doctor working at a Phaltan Sub-District Hospital in Maharashtra’s Satara district had allegedly died by suicide, leaving a note on her palm, accusing a police officer and a software engineer of rape and mental harassment. While the police have arrested the software engineer, the police officer remains at large.
A note purportedly written on her left palm named the PSI and her landlord’s son, a tech professional, accusing them of rape and harassment, both physical and mental. Based on this, the police arrested the two on charges of rape and abetment of suicide.
Chakankar’s visit comes amid political controversy, with opposition parties alleging that the doctor was pressured by influential elected representatives to alter medical reports of certain offenders arrested by the police. These allegations reportedly led to cross-complaints and an internal inquiry by senior health officials in the district before the doctor’s death.
Chakankar stated that the call data analysis revealed no contact between the PSI and the doctor after March. She added that the rape accusations are being verified based on postmortem results and forensic evidence.
