Maharashtra shocker: Patient attacks 2 Resident Doctors with knife at Yavatmal Hospital, Doctors Threaten Protest
Yavatmal: Violence against doctors was recently reported at Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College (GMC) in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, where two doctors were assaulted with a fruit cutter knife by a patient on Thursday.
Initially the patient attacked a resident doctor, who was on rounds in the hospital. When the other doctor came to the rescue of his colleague, he was also attacked.
Superintendent of police (SP) Pawan Bansod informed ANI that a first information report (FIR) was being filed in connection with the incident.
He further informed that the accused patient, who had stabbed himself two days ago, is a mentally unstable person. Police have arrested the accused.
Meanwhile, doctors protested against this incident of attack on the resident doctor and writing to the Home Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the doctors under Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors Network informed their decision of stopping all emergency and non-emergency services at SVNGMC with effect from January 6, 2023.

As per the latest media report by Zee News, the incident took place around 9 pm yesterday when the concerned patient, who had been admitted to the surgery department of the hospital for self-inflicted stomach surgeries, allegedly refused the doctors to examine him.
Later when the doctors came back to check on the patient, he allegedly attacked one of them with a fruit-cutter knife and it resulted in injuries to the lower jaw bone of the doctor. When the other doctor tried to help his colleague, he was also attacked and sustained injuries to his finger.
Immediately SP Dr Pawan Bansod who himself is Dental surgeon & Collector Amol Yedge came to medical college. IMA office bearers of IMA Yavatmal also rushed to spot yesterday.
While commenting on the matter, SP Bansod told ANI, "Accused Suraj Thakur was admitted at Yavatmal Medical College Hospital. The accused had stabbed himself two days ago. He's a mentally unstable person. While the doctor was on rounds, the accused attacked him with a knife." He further informed that the accused has been arrested.
Meanwhile, the students became aggressive after the gruesome attack and in this regard, IMA-JDN, Maharashtra wrote to the Home Minister and stated, "The medical fraternity today witnessed another incident of violence against doctors. On 5th Jan, during the evening rounds at 07:30 pm in SVNGMC Yavatmal, a patient assaults and stabs a first year resident of General Surgery with a knife on the neck just above the back and injures him critically. Two surgery residents are injured, out of which one is severely injured and the other is undergoing operation. We at IMA JDN Maharashtra stand together against this act and strongly condemn it by protesting against it."
"We demand an establishment of police chowky in the area to stop such incidents in the future and a strong legal actionable against the offenders. In view of the protest, residents of SVNGMC Yavatmal will stop all emergency and non-emergency services with effect from tomorrow. We urge you to take immediate appropriate action regarding this incident," further read the letter.

Speaking about this, Dr Sharad Rakhunde Secretary IMA Yavatmal said, "Students were very aggressive after the gruesome attack. Culprit has the past crime record. He was taken in to immediately custody .FIR is lodged and culprit arrested."
He further informed about another meeting conveyed in the afternoon between the administration and MARD, IMA-JDN. IMA Yavatmal President Dr Ratparakhi Dr Rakhunde & other members will attend & extend support in writing to Students.
