Nagaon Medical College doctor collapses during gym workout, dies

Nagaon: In an unfortunate incident, an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Nagaon Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Assam died after reportedly collapsing while working out at a gym during his routine workout.

Dr Sahin Rahman reportedly became unconscious at around 7:36 pm on Wednesday while exercising during his routine workout. The incident was reportedly captured on CCTV, reports The Daily.

According to PTI, people present at the gym rushed to help him and offered water, but the doctor reportedly died of cardiac arrest on the spot, police said. Though the post-mortem report is awaited, initial examination indicated cardiac arrest as the cause of death, an officer said, adding that the matter is under investigation. He is a resident of Guwahati and had joined the hospital nearly a year ago.

The unexpected death of the medical professional has prompted concern about the potential risks associated with strenuous physical activity, particularly during high-intensity workouts.

Exercise-induced heart attacks, medically known as exertional myocardial infarctions, are considered rare but potentially serious events. The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar (IIPHG) has noted that cardiovascular events can, in uncommon cases, occur during or shortly after intense physical activity.

Doctors generally stress that regular exercise offers significant cardiovascular benefits, but excessive exertion may pose risks, particularly for people with underlying health conditions or those who suddenly begin strenuous workouts after a prolonged period of inactivity, reports Deccan Chronicle.

The doctor's sudden collapse was captured on the gym's CCTV, and the footage has since circulated on social media.

The incident has also sparked discussion on social media. In a recent post on X, Dr Saransh Verma, RDA President at UPUMS Saifai, Co-Convener of IMA JDN UP and a member of the Board of State Governors of FORDA, expressed concern over the death of the 47-year-old doctor.
