Nagpur doctor perform life-saving surgery on 35-year-old man suffering from damaged carotid arteries
Nagpur: A Nagpur-based doctor performed life-saving surgery on a patient suffering from damaged carotid arteries, a rare case with a low survival rate.
Vascular and interventional radiologist, Dr Sachin Dhomne performed an endovascular technique called flow diverter stenting on the patient.

The patient was a 35-year-old farmer from Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh who began showing symptoms of the condition while recovering from a road accident that took place in July.
He started to get headaches, which the doctors termed as a 'routine' issue in the aftermath of the accident and month-long neurological treatment. In the accident, one lung of the patient collapsed, and he lost vision in his left eye. However, he began bleeding from his nose after the headaches and was referred to a Nagpur-based hospital.
In Nagpur, Dr Dhomne performed CT brain angiography which showed trauma to brain blood vessels (carotid artery) resulting in dissection (tear) and ballooning (aneurysm). The bleeding helped in detecting the patient's condition.
Speaking to TOI, Dr Dhomne said, "It is a miracle that the patient survived such a severe neurological defect. His condition was similar to someone living with a time bomb which can explode any time. The brain artery, which is well protected, was damaged in the accident, which shows how severe the trauma was."
He added, "Emergency nasal packing was done by an ENT surgeon and the patient was referred to Crescent Hospital for further management."
Stating that the surgery is performed from a small groin pinhole puncture, he said, "Flow diverter stent was arranged from Mumbai. A small tube, called catheter, was inserted and the flow diverter stent was placed in the brain artery diverting the flow away from aneurysm, thus achieving haemostasis and immediate cessation of bleeding."
The patient's case was an example of post-traumatic leaking brain aneurysms which has a high mortality rate and could turn fatal if not treated on time.
Stating that the survival rate of patients with damaged carotid arteries is rare, Dr Aziz Khan, director of the hospital said, "I have not seen such a case during my 40 years of medical practice." Dr Kashif Syed, cardiologist at the hospital said, "Earlier, it was difficult for surgeons to correct this deformity. New tools and techniques are available now."
