Navi Mumbai doctor allegedly demands 20 lakh dowry, FIR lodged
Thane: A woman doctor has been allegedly harassed by her husband and in-laws by demanding Rs 20 lakh dowry to set up a clinic in Parli in Beed district of Maharashtra.
The Navi Mumbai police have registered an offence against a doctor and his family for allegedly harassing his wife, who is also a doctor, an official said on Sunday.
A case under section 498(a) (harassment) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code was registered on Friday based on a complaint lodged by the victim, the official from Khandeshwar police station said.
The complainant has alleged that her husband and in-laws physically and mentally tortured her and demanded Rs 20 lakh from her family to set up a clinic for her husband in Parli in Beed district, he said.
Further investigation is underway in the case and no arrests have been made, the official added.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that in the update regarding the suicide of the PG medico from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, police had detained the doctor, who had allegedly backed out of their marriage proposal recently after her family failed to meet the heavy dowry demands from the groom's family. Apart from being taken into police custody, the said doctor has also been suspended by the State Health Department, informed Health Minister Veena George.
Health Minister Veena George directed the director of the Women and Child Development Department to carry out a probe and submit a report regarding this. The state Minority Commission also intervened in the issue and initiated a case on its own based on media reports in this regard. Its Chairperson A A Rasheed directed the district collector, city police commissioner and director of medical education to appear before the Commission during its next sitting here on December 14 and submit a report on the incident.
