NMC Chief Dr Abhijat Sheth felicitated by Delhi CM on Doctors' Day, calls for responsible AI in medicine
New Delhi: The Delhi Chief Minister felicitated the Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the President of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), Dr Abhijat Sheth, on the occasion of Doctors' Day, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to medical education.
Dr. Sheth is a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon, having a long and distinguished career in adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Research, and academic work initially in India and then extensively in the UK.
He published more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals, e.g., Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 40 abstract presentations, and 40 conference presentations at the British Thoracic Society, World Congress of Bronchology, European Respiratory Society, and American Thoracic Society.
While Dr. Sheth previously held the office of President of the National Board of Examinations (NBE), he was appointed NMC Chairperson last year. Earlier this year, Dr. Sheth was re-nominated as the President of the governing body of NBEMS for a third consecutive term.
Under his leadership, NBEMS, an autonomous body under the Union Health Ministry, achieved a historic milestone by being officially recognised by Guinness World Records for ''Most viewers of an Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare lesson live stream on YouTube''. The record was achieved through the successful implementation of a nationwide online training programme on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, designed specifically for registered medical practitioners across the country. The peak concurrent viewership for the programme was 17,999.
The AI training initiative was conceptualised by NBEMS under the leadership of Dr Abhijat Sheth to empower doctors with foundational and applied knowledge of artificial intelligence.
On the occasion of Doctors' Day, Dr. Sheth urged doctors, teachers and all medical institutions to embrace Artificial Intelligence as a transformative force in healthcare, while ensuring that its adoption remains ethical, evidence-based and patient-centric.
He emphasised that AI has the potential to transform patient care, medical education and research, but must always complement—not replace—the clinical judgment, compassion and accountability of doctors.
Calling upon medical institutions to prepare for the future, Dr. Sheth encouraged the profession to build AI-ready healthcare systems through continuous learning, innovation, responsible governance and scientific integrity.
Speaking to the Medical Dialogues team, Dr. Sheth said, "The future of medicine lies in the responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence. Let us harness AI to improve care, strengthen medical education, accelerate research and ultimately deliver better outcomes for every patient."
