No bail for doctors in fake COVID-19 vaccination scam

Mumbai: The bail petition of a doctor couple who were arrested in June last year for their alleged role in a fake vaccine scam was recently rejected by the sessions court in Mumbai.

The couple, who are in their 60s, used to run a Charkop based hospital and were arrested in 2021 after the Police had filed several FIRs against the doctor couple for their connection with an alleged fake COVID-19 vaccine scam that had put people's lives at risk. The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the arrest of the Mumbai-based doctor couple in the case.

The FIR states that the co-accused of the doctor couple called a bank, and arranged for vaccination for the employees. However, some of the employees who were vaccinated in the hospital are not receiving a certificate.

Further, the doctor couple has been accused of providing used vials or bogus vaccine doses to other accused. Further, the prosecution alleged that the doctor couple was authorized to carry out vaccination only till April 28 at the Shivam hospital, but the accused continued with the fake drive even after that.

Rejecting their bail application, the sessions court said, "Though no vial is said to have been seized from the applicants, a vial is said to have been seized from the hospital of the applicants, which did not contain the dose of vaccine...".

The court added that the circumstances present the gravity of the crime during the pandemic situation, as per the TOI report. The court added, "...the applicants (accused) do not deserve to be enlarged on bail, though the charge sheet is filed."
