Odisha doctor loses Rs 75000 in Cyber Fraud
Bhadrak: A doctor at the Dhamnagar Community Health Centre in Odisha’s Bhardak district fell victim to cyber fraud, losing Rs 75,000 to an online scammer on Tuesday.
The doctor has filed a formal complaint with both the Dhamnagar police station and the cyber police, requesting an investigation.
The victim, identified as Srimadhab Sethy, a doctor posted at Dhamnagar CHC, reported that while treating patients at the hospital, he received a call from an unknown number. The caller, claiming to know Dr. Sethy, explained that one of his relatives was admitted to the hospital and that he was unable to transfer funds directly to the patient's account. Instead, the caller stated that he had transferred Rs 75,000 to Dr Sethy's account and requested the doctor to forward the amount to a number provided in a Google Pay screenshot sent via WhatsApp.

Dr Sethy, without verifying the caller’s information, trusted the details provided and sent the amount to the given number. However, after completing his shift and reviewing his account, he realized that the money had never been transferred to his account by the caller. Upon realizing he had fallen victim to a well-crafted cyber scam, he complained to the Dhamnagar police station as well as to the cyber police.
Dr Sethy acknowledged his role in falling prey to the scam, citing negligence on his part due to his busy work hours. As per the recent media report, Srimadhab Sethy told Odisha TV, “I became the victim of cyber fraud unfortunately due to my foolish act. I couldn’t check my account before sending money due to my negligence and busy duty hours. I am hopeful that cyber police will help me get back my money and nab the fraudster.”
