Odisha: Retired IAF Doctor duped of Rs 1.46 lakh on pretext of electricity bill payment
Bhubaneswar: A retired Indian Air Force (IAF) doctor from Bhubaneswar recently lost Rs 1.46 lakh after cyber fraudsters cheated him on the pretext of electricity bill payment.
The doctor, who is a resident of the Chandrasekharpur area in Bhubaneswar, received a message on his mobile phone which stated that his electricity bill was pending with a warning that the electrical connection would be permanently cut if the bill is not paid on time.
The doctor after reading the message called on the number which was mentioned in the message. A person impersonating an employee of the electricity department took the call, reports the Prameya News.
The person asked the doctor to make the payment online which the latter declined. However, the person then gave him discount offers and convinced the doctor to pay Re 1 through the link shared by him online. The doctor clicked on the link and submitted his details. He then shared an OTP that he had received on his phone with the person.
However, an amount of Rs 1.46 lakh was debited from the doctor's account in two installments as soon as he shared the OTP with the fraudster. After that, the doctor lodged a complaint at the Chandrasekharpur and Cyber police.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a similar incident where a doctor couple from Nagpur in Maharashtra had been duped of Rs 2 lakh by a cyber fraudster who posed as an Army officer and made one of the victims, an ophthalmologist, click a link sent to her mobile phone under the pretext of organizing an eye check-up camp for jawans. The accused introduced himself as an Army officer over the phone to the ophthalmologist and said that he wanted to organize an eye check-up camp for 400 jawans.
