On-duty Gynaecologist assaulted at GMCH Sundargarh

Two Accused Arrested
Rourkela: Tension gripped the Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sundargarh, after an on-duty obstetrics and Gynaecologist was allegedly assaulted by two attendants of a patient late Wednesday evening. Following the incident, the police arrested both accused.
The incident triggered a strike by doctors, medical students, and hospital staff, causing severe disruption of outpatient and emergency services until Thursday morning.
Both accused are residents of Sundargarh district, under the Kinjrikela and Sadar police station limits, respectively.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Wednesday, when two men arrived at the casualty department with an elderly patient seeking medical attention. The on-duty obstetrics and gynaecology specialist examined the patient. As she required an orthopaedic consultation, the doctor advised them to wait for the orthopaedic specialist.

However, the situation escalated quickly. The two men reportedly became agitated over the wait time, began verbally abusing the doctor, and then allegedly physically assaulted him, grabbing him by the shirt collar and issuing threats, before leaving the hospital with the patient.
As per TOI, the incident sparked tension across the GMCH campus. Doctors, students, and staff launched a protest, suspending OPD and emergency services for several hours.
The protesting staff demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and the implementation of stronger security measures to protect medical professionals.
