PG students throw serious allegations of negligence against AIIMS Nagpur faculty, Administration says "baseless" complaint

Nagpur: In a shocking development, the postgraduate students enrolled at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur have alleged that one of the surgeons of the institute is "incompetent, arrogant, irresponsible and irrational."

The students have claimed the concerned faculty to be incapable of conducting major surgeries. They have also alleged that the concerned doctor is responsible for delaying treatment and not providing proper post-operative facilities to the patients.

Submitting the complaint to the office of the Director around a month ago, the students referred to the multiple lapses by the surgeon in detail. However, despite such a complaint, the administration did not set up any committee or cross-check them.

In fact, the director of the institute, Dr. Vibha Dutta and the surgeon both have refused to comment on the matter claiming "it is a baseless and anonymous complaint".

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, in their complaint, the PG students claimed that the concerned surgeon on several occasions either "risked the lives of patients during operations, delayed surgeries or denied post-operative care for unexplained reasons".

"He is incapable at all levels. He is an incompetent surgeon. He is not able to do any major surgery alone like thyroidectomy, laparotomy and parotidectomy. He is not aware where to take incision in any particular surgery. Once there was major intra operative bleeding and because of this he fainted and rest of the case was managed by juniors," the students claimed in the complaint.

"One patient was operated by him for multiple peritoneal and hepatic hydatid cyst. Post-operation, the patient developed SSI (surgical site infection) and pus was oozing from the sutured area. He didn't allow the patient a USG or CT and even screamed at the faculty who suggested it. The patient went home without knowing post-operative findings and we couldn't give proper advice," it further read.

Apart from this, the students have further alleged in the complaint how the surgeon yelled at them in a very cruel and disgusting manner in front of all the patients, nursing officers, housekeeping staff and humiliated them.

Troubled with such instances of harassment, several senior residents (SRs) and junior residents (JRs) have allegedly left their position at the institute, claimed the letter.

While commenting on this, a PG student who shifted to another institute told TOI, "Who would leave his or her PG seat at an institute like AIIMS-Nagpur? But it was becoming unbearable. We were not allowed to even leave campus for a thing like hair cut without his permission. He didn't allow us to do small procedures without his permission, thus delaying treatment to patients."

"He threatens everyone that he will see them, or remove from institution. Students are not learning anything," the student added.
