PG Surgery Student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College commits suicide, was under stress allegedly due to dowry demand
Thiruvananthapuram: In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old young doctor who was pursuing her postgraduate medical studies at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College allegedly committed suicide by injecting a heavy dose of anaesthesia into her body in her apartment on Tuesday.
Although the police are investigating the reason behind her taking the extreme step, the doctor's relatives claimed that she may have resorted to taking her own life because her marriage was on hold. The person with whom the doctor was set to tie the knot demanded a huge dowry for marriage.
The relatives alleged that the groom's family demanded Rs 50 lakhs, 50 sovereigns of gold and a car as dowry. Despite having financial difficulties since their father passed away a few months ago, the doctor's family accepted the request. However, as per the statements of the relatives, the matter became twisted when the groom's family started demanding more money and an expensive car and later backed out from the marriage after the doctor's family cited their inability to provide the dowry.
The deceased was a PG student in the surgery department of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
According to the police, the doctor was under extreme mental stress and emotional distress due to the alleged dowry request that she was unable to afford. Her relatives claimed that the groom's family told them that the marriage would not proceed if the doctor's family failed to provide a dowry. Hence, the relatives fear that the doctor committed suicide over the unsuccessful marriage proposal.
During a preliminary investigation, the police found a suicide note in her room. The doctor in her suicide note said, "Everyone wants money, money triumphs over everything. My father died. There is no one to help financially anymore."
“He came to us with the proposal and said he liked my sister. She also was agreeable. When we met his father, it was clear that he was someone who wanted more dowry. We said we could give what a family like us could afford. The discussions went on many times and finally, it was called off,” her brother told The News Minute.
¨We had offered to give Rs 50 lakhs, 50 sovereigns of gold and a car. But they were not satisfied with this. Her father died a few months ago and the family had some financial issues,¨ one of her relatives told the media.
According to Mathrubhumi's news report, the doctor had night duty on Monday but she failed to attend the duty and stayed at home. Following this, she was discovered unconscious in her apartment at around 11:30 p.m. She was immediately rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead.
Subsequently, the police were informed about the incident. After arriving at the spot, the police conducted an investigation and asserted the cause of death as suicide based on her suicide note which was confirmed to be her handwriting.
A case was registered by the police based on complaints filed by the doctor's family and a probe has been initiated into the case. The recording of the statement of her relatives is going on.
